I thought it was a teacher's job to get students to look beyond the headlines and get the whole story. Example, if you just read the headlines, Abraham Lincoln was one of the best presidents we've ever had, freeing the slaves and winning a war to wipe out slavery. It's only when you dig deeper that you see he willingly violated the Constitution and didn't really like or respect black slaves at all.

Teaching only the headlines makes it easy for subsequent regimes to rewrite history. Think also on this. We revere our Founding Fathers as brave, principled men of honor who fought off the world's superpower to gain precious freedom. Had they lost, we would be taught today that they were insurrectionists and rightly hung as traitors. Sound familiar? Had J6 actually been an attempt to overthrow the government and had it succeeded, subsequent generations would be taught about the brave, principled freedom fighters.

Look below the headlines because they don't tell the whole story.

I've never said it was peaceful; riots by definition are not peaceful. They ignored TRUMP!'s admonition to peacefully let their voice be heard and it rapidly got out of hand. Of course, they didn't hear him say that because the riot wasn't tied to the rally where he said it.

That's what I'm saying, teachers should be teaching students how to think critically and how to arrive at logical, not emotional conclusions.

That is my point. It is the teacher's responsibility to expose the students to the truth, and that means not just the sanitized version the victors write. Events are rarely as black and white as we like to portray them. The Founding Fathers would today be regarded as simple traitors to the crown had they lost the Revolutionary war.
