There’s clearly considerable ignorance and confusion with regard to the term neo-fascist.
Many incorrectly infer that it has to do with Nazis, death camps, denying the Final Solution, or being an anti-Semite – when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.
Although all Nazis were fascists, not all fascists are Nazis – not all fascists are warmongers or hateful of Jews; indeed, the argument can be made that there are neo-fascist elements among the Israeli right with regard to the policy toward Palestinians.
Rather, neo-fascism is illiberal:
Il·lib·er·al
opposed to liberal principles; restricting freedom of thought or behavior:
"illiberal and anti-democratic policies"
Neo-fascism is reactionary:
reactionary
Characterized by reaction, especially opposition to progress or liberalism; extremely conservative
And neo-fascism is nativist:
nativist
A sociopolitical policy, especially in the United States in the 1800s, favoring the interests of established inhabitants over those of immigrants.
The above accurately describes Trump, his supporters, and the ‘MAGA’ movement – all of which are in fact neo-fascist.
It’s perfectly appropriate, therefore, to refer to some on the right as neo-fascist – to do so is not to accuse conservatives of being ‘Nazis’ or ‘anti-Semites.’
