We are getting hit hard with snow here in southwestern New Hampshire, but the gym was well attended this morning as the storm intensified. I even had to wait for a few Nautilus machines. There was a good mix of age groups there, and I found this heartening. I do upper body on ten machines, fifty reps each with medium weights. Reps are way more important than big weight. It takes me 45 minutes to an hour to get the upper body stuff done. I will be 79 in a few weeks.

As a cyclist, I have two kinds of stationary cycling machines at home in a spare room. I have a Cycle-Ops Power 400 Pro that is like a Peloton. I also have a Sole LCR that I got from a Black Friday sale at Dick’s Sporting Goods years ago. The LCR is a backrest-sized model. I use them both.

Before I leave the gym in winter months, I walk on a treadmill for two hours. It is important for bone mineral density which is not addressed well when cycling. I ride the cycling machines for two hours as well, sometimes the Cycle-Ops, sometimes the Sole. I sold my Harleys in 1998 and bought two high-end racing bicycles which I raced and crashed often.

Today I will watch the football game as I peddle the Sole. Time goes by quickly as I peddle faster when the game gets close.

I am 76, and have given due attention to fitness stuff for my entire adult life. My wife and I spend some time in Florida each Winter and this year we are taking it to a higher level, planning to spend all of February and March at The Villages.

This Winter has been very bad from a standpoint of just getting out of the house. Most days have either been snowy or just too cold to walk. We make do with trips to Planet Fitness, the walks we can do, and my stationary bike. We bowl but that doesn't count for much, fitness-wise. Regrettably, outside that 90 minutes of a workout, most of our time is spent either on this ******* screen or watching the telly.

I have spent basically my entire adult life "a little bit overweight," and decided to get serious about controlling my weight. We both went on a diet on Labor Day (she is short in stature and had gotten up to 117), and I am down from 213 to 175. She is at 203 and looks great. In fact, I have not been able to get off the diet in a satisfactory way and am still eating one meal per day and am quite satisfied with that. We'll see how that plays out in Florida. Potatoes, white bread, bagels, cookies, and candy are not longer a thing, and in fact we still have 50 kids worth of Halloween candy in the closet.

I feel terribly healthy. We'll see how I feel and look six months from now.

The older i get the more i enjoy the snow and cold. Its refreshing and a good time to exercise outside.

I despise the cold and all the myriad of feelings it leaves behind. All the effort just to survive. You make up for it on my behalf in some small way.

Then why do you stay in Canada? You never stop talking about how much you hate it

Two hours!!! Good for you. I spend about an 1.5 on the treadmill and have even started JOGGING....I don't even know who I am in retirement at this point. I have hated jogging my entire life but here I am, loving it
