Despite the heartbreaking circumstances immigrants coming from a number of Central American countries and other parts of the world face, we need to reform who qualifies for asylum. The standards for permanent admission must be higher in order to discourage immigrants from coming to the border in the first place.
Once here, asylum seekers awaiting final determination must be allowed to work so they do not present such a financial burden on the states and municipalities who temporarily let them in.
Resources must be focused on punishing employers who knowingly hire immigrants who are here illegally.
Border security should be increased by employing methods proven to work to either capture or prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border.
A system by which qualified applicants can enter a program eventually leading to citizenship should be established.
We should identify skilled jobs in need of filling and prioritize the admission of qualified immigrants who have the skills to fill them.
A number of these measures, specifically regarding enhanced border security and targeting employers, were included in a bipartisan immigration reform bill that passed the Senate in 2013.
