Hi! I've been offered a job in the UK as a secure communications specialist for the next few years, and I'm going to be taking it. However I was wondering how income tax and national insurance worked there - I will be paid into a UK bank and according to this UK tax calculator (UK Income Tax Calculator 2017) I'll be making about £3,500 a month. I'll be working in London, don't think I'll live there but will live not far outside it and commute in.

Didn't mean to click send! My question continued: What is NI on this calculator and will I have to pay it on top of tax? I'm not sure how it all works in the UK and could use some advice. Thanks in advance, and my apologies for the double post! :)

£3,500 a month won't get you far in London.

National Insurance: How much you pay

Your employer will pay the same as yourself. That covers your health, pension and benefits if you cant work.

As stated, £40k a month wont get you much in that London but if you can find a share you will have a great time there.

Personal opinion moving there will be the biggest mistake of your life Europe is falling but oh well. Good luck.
