Mother Pays For Her Son to Have Friends (Based On A True Story)

What actually got me friends in the end is when I started being my own friend first and respecting myself. :)

I've had some people come along in my life that just don't know how to function in society. They WANT to, but they never had the kind of teachers I did back when, and aside from some well meaning parents, they never had anybody to teach them social skills or how to deal with people. So far, I think I'm up to about 4 or 5 people I've helped "break out". The trick is, for me anyway.....they have to be willing and wanting to learn. And these people were. So I helped them out.

Now that I've rubbed off on them a bit, and they've had thier questions answered with actual answers that they required, and learned HOW to talk to people, deal with people, and how to engage with people............they are all doing super duper fantastic. Except one. She's a special case, because she had a mother worse than mine. I was able to talk to her about it, as she had tons of questions about why people treat her the way they did and how people get along with each other and such...........but her mother did a BIG, FUCKING, MIND BLOWING screw job on her brain! Hopefully I set her on a course of killing her own demons, cause I wasn't able to finish with her, as I moved to another city.

Funny thing is, I did work with her sister as well, and she was like a sponge!!! Now.....instead of being meek and recoiling from people and going into shy mode when someone gets in her face.........she will jump back in theirs!!!!! Woohoo!!!! She will give her opinion now too, when she feels its needed. And she hasn't shied away from anything in YEARS now.

With intellectual disability, sometimes the worst situation is when somebody is slow but has the same desires as a "normal" person. He perhaps doesn't know he's addled. The person gets laughed at, longs after girls, but has no chance. I knew a guy like that. In his 40s, he was walking a mile to the 7-11 in town to see a 19-year-old that worked there. He couldn't understand why he was rejected and ridiculed. Although I didn't join in the ridicule, I thought it was funny which is just as bad.

There are no retarded people just slow learners.
Facrually that is not the case . Once you get below IQ 80 the growth and learning ptential steadily drop to zero .
I have part involvement with a dreadfully handicpped 11 year old boy who is a vegetable in every sense of the word .
There is no possible educational programme for him or any means of communication .
To think otherwise is sentimental fantasy . He weighs 18.5 kgm-- not quite 3 stone --- .because body messages are not noticed by his very small brain and PEG feedng is best for him .
The only thing he has learned , or ever will , is that he can register pain on an involuntary basis .

Well there's some things I still don't know and understand, but that still doesn't make me any different from anybody else and my fiancée has told me exactly the same thing btw. The special ed teachers I had that literally gave up on me and tried to make me give up on myself didn't have the right to be a special ed teacher.

I'm sorry you had that experience. I was probably a young teacher when you were in school. If you're on the autism spectrum, then those teachers back then did not know a fraction about how to teach/reach those with ASD compared to what they know now. No consolation for you, I know.

Still, the misuse of the word retard is most abused.

Actually I'm not Autistic, I don't have an official diagnosis of anything but I sort of self-diagnosed myself of being dyslexic. It's minor though.
