I would agree that some of the more extreme positions being touted by the presidential candidates to corral their base has probably had a negative affect on how the average American views them.

Minimal government (taxes, regulation) beyond rationality. Focus on MONEY (for already rich) over general social welfare of citizens; corporations rule at expense of consumers.
Support religious extremists in their anti-abortion zeal, yet ignore freedoms of adult citizens & the welfare of the luckless, unwanted poor babies already born, etc.

How does the GOP focus on money for the rich? Do you mean letting them keep more of what they earn?
