Mosque On Ground Zero. An Act Of Aggression: Yea Or Nay?

Within few years after the death of Muhammad, mosques became such important symbols, that when Muslim conquerors established themselves somewhere, a mosque was put up first, and then the military camp was built around it.

"Modern day Turkey is among the most moderate of Muslim states. As such, it was welcomed into the NATO alliance as sharing some of the values of its Western members. But comments by Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his beliefs about Islam and the symbolism its mosques represent, should give us pause for concern. “The mosques,” Erdogan has said, “are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the believers our army.”

Muslims Know the Symbolism of the Ground Zero Mosque.. - Univision Foro / Forum

Turkey is a secular nation just as we are.

Onward Christian soldiers...

Technically speaking Turkey is a secular nation, but if you've ever been over there, well let's just say Islam and Christianity are not on equal footing.

In fact when Turkey petitioned to join the EU several members commented about a Muslim nation's ability to fit in.

Turkey is 99% Muslim. It's remarkable they're a secular nation.

You better damn well believe this a act of aggression.

and Mayor Bloomingidiot should be run out of office.

In name only. NYcarbineer gets sent to school AGAIN.

Now he gets quoted by the Premier of Turkey. Who appears to agree with him about the military meaning of a mosque.

He recited poem in 1997, and was jailed in 1998.
After he was released from jail he said, that prison matures a man.
He split with the Welfare Party and reformist wings founded the AKP party, which first of all is a universal capitalist party.

On November 2002, AKP was elected into government.
In 2008, the Supreme Court of Appeals demanded a five-year ban for Erdogan and a general ban for the AKP on grounds of anti-secular activities.
The Constitutional Court rejected that demand.

The EU opposed banning the AKP. EU said that there is systemic error in the Turkish Constitution regarding banning of parties. EU demanded to reform Constitution.
European Union - News - Statement by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn on the latest development in the prosecution case against the AKP in Turkey

This is currently done.
On 12th September will be a referendum in Turkey regarding the Constitutional changes.

Putting a Mosque near ground zero will remind Americans about what Muslims did to America on 9/11. Rather than 'creating tolerance' for Muslims it will create only distrust and disgust towards Muslims. ;)

So Muslims should build a mosque there by all means and destroy every positive image of Islam in America forever in a way that atheists like me could only dream of.

HAHA!

yea.. as if you stupid bastards were *just about to* start liking muslims.

This issue is a litmus test of whether people believe in the Constitution or not. If you don't like the idea of a Mosque not really at ground zero in the first place but in the vicinity, I think you're silly but whatever. If you think they shouldn't be allowed to build it, then you don't believe in the first amendment. Period.

Bigots forget that Muslim Americans died on 9/11 too, Muslim Americans helped rescue and clean up and grieved. Anyone so simpleminded and ignorant as to think the billion and a half Muslims worldwide, or several thousand in New York, are all part of one monolithic and antagonistic group need to admit that they simply have a broad prejudice and drop all other pretenses about insensitivity or aggression.

A NY mosque and 9/11 have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

If a Christian church was built a few blocks from the Alfred P. Murrah building in OKC, none of you bigots would be up in arms about how "aggressive" it is. Opposition to this is based on ignorance at best, racism at worst, simple as.

Personally i believe if the builders of this large Mosque really wanted to extend a hand of peace, love, and tolerance they would decide to build it somewhere else. Anything less seems like an act of aggression in my opinion. I really am interested in hearing how you all feel about this. Thanks.

I read something interesting on anther messageboard.

The new Muslim community center, the Cordoba house is one of a number of religious institutions in close proximity to Ground Zero. Two blocks from the proposed Cordoba house in the opposite direction of WTC, is another mosque run, by a different imam (built in 1970). Between the Cordoba project and Ground Zero, are three christian facilities including two separate churches and one Christian community center (similar to the Cordoba house) and associated with one of the two churches.

Here, is one Muslim's opinion on the Cordoba House project:

The Cordoba House project, which seeks to construct a mosque and interfaith development centre near Ground Zero, aims to transform that grief into hope. For America, this project embodies an exemplary response to those who question whether our country can stick to its principles in times of pressure, whether our collective national identity supersedes differences in ethnicity and religion, and whether our passionate defence of liberty extends to all Americans. For Muslims, this project represents Islam as the majority of its adherents understand it – a faith that would dignify the human experience through compassion and respect.

Moreover, this project directly refutes the hatred and evil of those who sought to create enmity on 9/11. It insists that Americans understand the very essence of their national identity as being that of a country of many colours and faiths united by the belief in its founding principles of equality, freedom of expression, and justice. It insists that Muslims can be peace-loving and open people. Unfortunately, the debate over Cordoba House is the latest in a series that have drawn in rightwing figures such as Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich, eager to make political capital out of the affair and to drive a wedge between Muslim Americans and their non-Muslim neighbours. They conveniently ignore the heterogeneity in religious interpretation, social outlook, and cultural perspective among Muslim communities, and, more crucially, those founding principles that they claim to value so highly. Playing on public misperceptions of Islam, they question the project's sources of funding and the intentions of its planner, the Cordoba Initiative – an organisation whose stated aim is to "achieve a tipping point in Muslim-west relations within the next decade, steering the world back to the course of mutual recognition and respect."

Some would argue that the Cordoba Initiative should have anticipated the rightwing response and chosen another location. But its detractors are attempting to mould an America that is less open. They seek to define "American" in less inclusive terms. In pressing ahead with its plans, the Cordoba Initiative has questioned this redefinition of America, asserting that a mosque can be just as American as a church or a synagogue.

To not build it, would be to give in to religous intolerance and hatred. It would be to grant a legitimacy to a vision of America we thought long behind us.

I'm not the one advocating a ban on christian buildings, you ******* chode. You are the one demanding the gov swoop in, ironically, and save the day by banning muslims from enjoying their Constitutional rights. When you can stop being so ******* ironic then maybe, MAYBE you'll have a reason to feel like a victim. Today is not that day, it seems.

If they buy the land then they have a perfect right to build whatever they want to build on the site. They are in the process of trying to buy it. Last I heard they haven't bought it yet.

I think it would be totally insensitive on their part. I also think they should build the mosque somewhere else.

I also wonder if any NYC construction company would build it a block from ground zero??? I really have my doubts on that one.

It's only insensitive if you believe all of Islam is to blame.

Of course all Muslim isn't to blame.

I just wonder if anyone is going to see the difference between the jihadist terrorist dirtbags and regular law abiding Muslims??

I just wonder if anyone is going to bother with the difference??

I think folks are going to see a Muslim mosque a block from ground zero and thats all they are going to see.

The distinction is between muslims in name only and "believers"

9:111. Verily, Allâh has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allâh's Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Qur'ân. And who is truer to his covenant than Allâh? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success[].

9:112. (The believers whose lives Allâh has purchased are) those who repent to Allâh (from polytheism and hypocrisy, etc.), who worship Him, who praise Him, who fast (or go out in Allâh's Cause), who bow down (in prayer), who prostrate themselves (in prayer), who enjoin (people) for Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all what Islâm has ordained) and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds and all that Islâm has forbidden), and who observe the limits set by Allâh (do all that Allâh has ordained and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which Allâh has forbidden). And give glad tidings to the believers

You constantly call for such on the premise that NY is "too sensitive to 9/11 to allow it". Don't whitewash your position, dink. If you want to hate then at least have some balls about it.
