How Minneapolis Freed Itself From the Stranglehold of Single-Family Homes

"The city council abolished single-family-home zoning and will allow duplexes and triplexes to be built anywhere in the city. Single-family-only neighborhoods are woven into the DNA of the American dream: the leafy, peaceful street lined with stand-alone houses, green lawns and plenty of elbow room. But Minneapolis’ new vision of itself would essentially rewrite that code—reshaping the urban streetscape around walking and mass transit and rebooting the American dream to be more racially and economically inclusive. Janne Flisrand and John Edwards (not THAT John Edwards) are leading that charge with their group, Neighbors for More Neighbors."

They've never seen what happens when one crams too many rats into one cage.

But they will........

You will still be able to have them. You just aren't restricted to them. I lived in a college town that had little to no restrictions as far as zoning. It was a bit unusual but not really a travesty in the making. You would have a small trailer park next to a bar next to an apartment building next to a McMansion across from a funeral home beside a gas station.

Duplexes, condo's, quadraplexes, town homes, they have always existed and will continue. People who can afford single family homes are moving out of the city to rural areas where they can have a truly single family dwelling instead of a neighbor 10 feet or less away. In the city where housing is short, I thing most people in real estate development will welcome it.
