Without law and order under a functioning government, Syria will start exporting terrorism to the West, just like Afghanistan does under the Taliban. Syria will be ruled by a known jihadist and his Islamist militant group,
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). To cope with the threat of terrorism, European countries suspended the acceptance of Syrian refugee applications until further notice, fearing that jihadists would enter Europe disguised as refugees.
Britain announced that decisions on Syrian refugee applications would be suspended. The German Ministry of the Interior, which is currently hosting nearly one million Syrian refugees, announced that it would not process asylum applications until the political situation in Syria becomes clearer. Norway and Austria have also announced a temporary suspension of accepting Syrian refugees, and France plans to make a similar announcement soon.
The HTS chief has evolved from jihadist leader to rebel statesman while fighting to overthrow Bashar al-Assad.
