Mike Rowe reports that some electricians in Texas make more than $200K per year supporting AI data centers.

Thing is the mega data centers only employ 50 people on average (including contractor help) after they are built. The smaller centers half that or less.

Great trades gig if you can get it but I suspect the total number is quite small in the grand scheme of things.

The AI data centers themselves are the extreme example of the need for skilled tradesman. Talk to anyone involved in the construction business and they will tell you how hard it is to find these skilled workers.

Sure, when they are being built out, not so much when they are up and running.

It takes 18-24 months to build one out so yeah, that's steady employment. Once done they will have to go where the next job is. Great if you are young and single, not so much if you want to put down roots in a particular place.

AI is a double edged sword, but one positive aspect is the massive build out that AI is requiring and the increased need of skilled electricians, plumbers, construction workers etc. I had no idea that a 30 year old electrician could be making $200K per year!

Yep, electricians are definitely going to cash in.

Meanwhile all our electricity bills go up.

Our electricians in a steel mill that were experts on motor drives made more than that. That is not an exceptional amount for people with very specialized skills in electrical, automation, and electronics.

Yep, bring more and more of those dirty coal plants online, and watch the bills keep going up. In the meantime other nations are putting more and more solar online, with storage backup, and not increasing their residential rates at the rate that we are. In spite of the fact we have some of the largest and best areas for solar.

How much does Mike Rowe make pretending to do dirty jobs?

It is hard to find skilled tradesmen in all the trades now. Even though many companies offer apprentice programs where you make good money while learning a skill, all too few young people are willing to take the school time while working also. Even though it offers a good future.
