A federal program awarded $7.7 million to charter schools in Michigan that never opened. That's according to a report from the Network for Public Education.

A total of 257 charter schools in Michigan received money from the federal program. 72 of them never opened. No other state had that many unopened charter schools that received money from the Charter Schools Program.

Another 40 charter schools in Michigan that received money have since closed. In total, 44% of the schools that won grants are no longer open.

Because charter schools are, for the most part, scams. It's even worse in Indiana. There is zero oversight or true, punitive regulation, save for revoking a charter based on performance. By then, the money has already been stolen by the scammers who opened the charter schools.

It’s gotta be Trump’s fault.
Actually, Trump did Michigan a favor by removing the idiotic, unqualified Betsy DeVos, who is largely to blame for this legal theft of taxpayer money. Now we just have to keep her thieving ass in check at the federal level.

Another reason to abolish the Dept of Education.

Cool thread.

So I guess this is supposed to provide more evidence of how the feds are completely incompetent at providing edumacation?
No, this is what happens when we allow the private sector to operate education for profit without regulation. Good grief, pay attention...

Good news Trump is downsizing the incompetent departments.

Education for profit? I don’t know what you deal with in Indiana or Michigan, but here in Colorado our Charter School program is very successful and is tuition free, yet they only receive 80 cents of every dollar traditional public schools receive. Sounds like you have a crap system and need to tighten up your shit.

Busting the Myths Surrounding Colorado’s Charter Schools
Myth: Charter schools are private schools.

Fact: Charter schools are tuition-free public schools, period. They do not require admissions tests or any financial contributions and all students are welcomed to attend. Since Colorado is an open enrollment state, students can choose to attend their neighborhood school or “choice in” to another school inside their district or even outside their district.
Some of the highest performing schools in Colorado are public charter schools. In 2015, students in charter schools were more likely to score proficient or advanced in math, reading, and writing on the state assessment than their peers in traditional public schools. Further, our 2016 report Positive Outliers – Scaling Colorado’s Most Successful Schools found that, of Colorado’s 17 high-performing schools with a majority of low-income students, 12 are public charter schools.

So, the Dept of Education is just handing out millions with no oversight?

Yep, they need to be shut down immediately.

We absolutely do have a horrible system in Indiana with virtually zero oversight. In Colorado, your charter system is one "organ" of the public school system. That is not the case, in Indiana. In Indiana, charter schools are a scam that exist for two reasons:

- Getting Jesus or Mohammed into the classroom
- administrators stealing taxpayer money without oversight

There are some exceptions, but that is due to good intentions of some good people, not to the structure of the program.
