Methane warming Earth, cooling Pluto?

Gaseous methane is warming Pluto's atmosphere via greenhouse effect just like it does here on earth. There is very little effect on planetary temperature because the atmosphere is too thin.

The methane ice (which we don't get here) increases the planet's albedo reflecting more of the solar radiation back into space, cooling the planet.

Science is cool.

The published value of Pluto's albedo is 0.72 ... which what I used in my calculations above ... Earth and Moon are both around 0.30 for comparison ...

0.01 mb surface pressure ...

Yeah, Mercury is hot on the side facing the Sun, and actually cold enough for ice on the other...


Yes, there is water ice on Mercury, hidden in permanently shadowed craters near its poles where temperatures stay extremely cold, despite the planet's scorching daytime heat (up to 400°C).

Pluto and Mars both have highly elliptical orbits. Closer to Sun = warmer.

Both Pluto and Mars observed rising Surface Air Pressure when closer to Sun. Air pressure is correlated with temperature. IF Earth was warming, which it isn't, Earth's Surface Air Pressure would be rising, but for the past 60 years it is flat to down, proving


1. Earth is not warming
2. Earth is not experiencing an ongoing net ice melt

The article was confusing because it claimed atmospheric methane was causing temperatures 30F COLDER than it would otherwise be.

It does, and it is becuase of the thin atmosphere. The heat on the side away from the sun radiates into space.

However the day is 88 earth days long so it's kind of a misleading claime.

Another way the Methane could cool the surface as Pluto approaches perihelion is as it melts. Well, sublimes since it goes straight from solid to gas. Changing states like that requires energy, which the methane get from the environment. So just like melting water ice cools your iced tea subliming methane cools the area around it, lowering the surface temps.

This would only work down to the sublimation temperature of the methane ... -182ºC at 0.01 mb ... in your analogy, if the liquid water is 32ºF and the ice is 32ºF, mixing the two will not cause a temperature change ... stick this on a stove burner and the temperature will remain 32ºF until all the ice has melted ...

I'm using the calculated blackbody temperature of -235ºC at periapsis ... which keeps the bulk of the methane in her solid state ... however, it is a paraffin and paraffins tend to have high latent heat values ... in this case we're dealing with about 625 J/g for methane's heat of sublimation ...

The X post in the OP is based on fantasy, not science ... the citation doesn't mention this at all ...

I'm not a scientist or mathematician but I do know some basics of thermodynamics.

In your stove situation the temp will remain at 32 until the ice is melted because the ice is absorbing the heat/energy from its environment to melt, thus correspondingly lowing the temperature of the surrounding water. The math is over my head.

The environment is fire, or stove top cooking ... the liquid water doesn't change temperature while the ice is melting ... the energy comes from the burner ... at 1013 mb's ... on Pluto our results may differ ...

The burner heats the water, the ice absorbs the heat energy to melt, cooling the water. The liquid water does indeed change temperature or the energy from the stove would never get to the ice.

Is that what your thermometer says? ... I understand individual water molecules will vary in temperature, but that's not what we're measuring ... we're measuring average temperature ... average kinetic energy ...

This is a kitchen counter experiment ... the ice and water stay in thermal equilibrium until all the ice is melted ... same with boiling water, 212ºF until all the water has vaporized ... try it yourself ...

ETA: Pluto's near vacuum just means water goes from ice to vapor directly ... the latent energy still has to be provided by the Sun ... same with methane ... and I still think it's too cold there for any of this to be happening ...

One more thing. Air pressure is correlated with temperature. Surface Air Pressure is no different. Due to highly elliptical orbits, Mars and Pluto warm and cool dramatically due to change in distance from Sun. When they warm, their Surface Air Pressure rises, dramatically.

Over the past 70 years, Earth Surface Air Pressure is flat to down... proving

1. Earth is not warming
2. Earth is not experiencing an ongoing net ice melt
