In 2003, the year this movie was made, Memories of Murder was voted the best South Korean movie of all time in a poll of critics from 28 countries.

Memories of Murder is based on an actual serial killer who terrorized the town of Hwaseong from 1986 to the mid 90s. The serial killer was not captured until 2016, and thus the mystery was unsolved at the time of the making of this movie.

The story revolves around three detectives working the case in 1986. Two are from Hwaseong, and one is a more educated detective from Seoul.

The two rural detectives solve cases by framing local retards, and by beating suspects into false confessions. One of these idiots believes he can sense someone's guilt by looking in their eyes. When the man from Seoul arrives, he has to put as much work into getting these two dipshits in line as he does finding the real serial killer.

I love Korean movies. They are far superior to the crap Hollywood has been churning out. I feel sorry for people who avoid Korean movies because of the subtitles. They have no idea what they are missing.

There are some Korean movies which have dubbing. I don't know if this one does. But dubbing just sound so unnatural, I prefer the actual voices with subtitles.

Here is something really messed up. It seems, unlike the United States, murder has a statute of limitations in South Korea. So by the time the real serial killer was caught in 2016, he could not be prosecuted for those murders, even though he confessed.

However, he also murdered his sister-in-law and was tried and convicted inside the statute and was sentenced to 20 years with the possibility of parole.

Serial murderers in the US don't freak me out as much as Asian ones do. Yikes. You don't even know anything's wrong with them until they snap.
