In earlier times it was understood that the aim of the nation was to provide opportunity, and make all who come here to be Americans, want to be Americans.
It's time you understood who the Democrats are.

1.“Earlier American presidents, Republicans and Democrats alike, agreed on two basic goals: teach the newcomers English and make them Americans. The clear aim was to strengthen our national identity--to reinforce the unum in e pluribus unum--by assimilating the new arrivals into American civilization.”
http://www.aei.org/article/society-and-culture/anti-americanization/

2. That is no longer the case. It should be evident to all that the Democrat Party does not wish there to be an American nation, and the hostility to a border makes that more than clear.
But there are other, more subtle, machinations by the Left to keep all our out inhabitants from being American. One clear example is allowing American ballots printed as though they were issued in the language of the nations that immigrants left, rather than the one they ostensibly wish to become members of.

“The December 2016 Census Bureau report lists 17 "language minority groups" that qualify for ballot translations. While "Hispanic" is the sole language for the Latino category, the other three categories contain multiple languages. Seven are recognized within the Asian American category (Asian Indian, Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Chinese [including Taiwanese], Korean, Filipino, and Vietnamese). There are five American Indian languages that are covered (Apache, Choctaw, Navajo, Pueblo, and Ute), and four Alaska Natives languages (Alaska Athabascan, Aleut, Inupiat, and Yup'ik).

While most jurisdictions on the Census list need to provide materials for one language group, some diverse urban areas have several. Los Angeles County, California, for instance, is required to provide translations to six groups: Cambodian, Chinese (including Taiwanese), Filipino, Hispanic, Korean, and Vietnamese.”

3. Government school has an agenda, so they will not teach the original view of immigration and assimilation. Progressive/Republican President articulated the correct view:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”― Theodore Roosevelt

In none of these views, with none of these aims, is the Democrat Party copacetic.

It’s power is derived from division and grievances.

Once declared a legal citizen one should follow the laws. Forcing one set of ideals is difficult at best. I for one identify myself through my dna and american born citizenship. I speak English only and follow the la s. Good enough.

How do you equate that with Teddy Roosevelt's description of what it means to be an American?

1. To become a naturalized citizen, one is expected to understand English. Yet many new citizens demand a ballot in their first language. Millions of dollars are spent on printing those ballots for people who supposedly know English. That's why the language part of the naturalization exam is a farce. If you say, "I love this country," the examiner will congratulate you on passing the language section! Dang! A ballot just has some names. You put a mark next to the name you like. Why, oh why, do the liberals want to coddle new citizens so much?

2. Some schools have rejected the "melting pot" idea ("As American as apple pie") for the salad bowl idea (each culture and ethnicity is an element in a big bowl. Martians are the tomatoes, people from Jupiter are the olives, people from Venus are lettuce, etc.).

We were never a “melting pot” where everyone spoke English and melted into society.

Our cities were segregated.....Little Italy, China Town, German Town...each ethnic group kept their same communities and spoke the old language and old customs.

It was the second generation that integrated....just like today

Show the law where naturalized citizens are expected to understand English.

For six years, I had the pleasure of helping immigrants prepare for the naturalization test.

They had to memorize the answers to 100 questions.

And they did an excellent job.

They knew more about American government than most Americans ever will. ("How many Representatives are there?")

They were also told that an examiner would expect to have a simple conversation in English: What is your last name? Where were you born? What is your favorite TV show?

A ballot has some names. Just mark the name you like, darn it! Why should American taxpayers have to spend millions of dollars on printing ballots in their first language? The new citizens at the turn of the twentieth century never expected such coddling.

2. Some schools have rejected the "melting pot" idea ("As American as apple pie") for the salad bowl idea (each culture and ethnicity is an element in a big bowl. Martians are the tomatoes, people from Jupiter are the olives, people from Venus are lettuce, etc.).

Excellent!!!

Exactly the road this thread is designed to traverse!!!!

Melting pot does not mean bleaching though. Society must change a little to accommodate them as they change to accommodate society.

How do you equate that with Teddy Roosevelt's description of what it means to be an American?

To melt both sides change
And we have....today is TACO TUESDAY!

Nowhere does it say they surrender their original origin or identity since that never leaves them for the rest of their life, what it does say is that people coming from other nations needs to be American in two basic ways, learn the COMMON language and to support and defend the Country as an American.

My wife is from the Philippines who came to America to get married and live here, she never forgets her birthplace or her family she left behind, but she wanted to be a citizen and American by improving her English and work a full time job.

Today she is an American Citizen no longer a Pilipino citizen.
