Mayotte is a speck of land in the Indian ocean. Its also a department of France and as such a part of the EU.
But living standards are much lower, so are educational standards. People live in corrugated shanty towns and are not paid European wages.
But France has a big naval base there and it plays a key strategic role in Frances defence.
The problem seems to be colonialism and French colonialism. This is where a european power extracts all the value in a country while putting nothing back.
Isnt Puerto Rico similar to Mayotte ? A colonial prisoner o a western power. A "garbage dump" in the middle of the ocean ?

Mayotte has been French for longer than Nice. Why is it still treated with colonial arrogance? | Rokhaya Diallo
