I left my apartment for a five week trip overseas.
I am the kind of person who will safety-check everything at least four times before leaving on such a trip, seeing that all stove burners were off, unplugging a lot of appliances, checking door locks over and over.
When I returned from my trip, my teakettle, which I always set off the burner when I was not using it, was on the front burner, which was set on "Low". If there had been any water in it, it was certainly long burned away.
One time, I saw a wire coat hanger balancing on a doorknob! When I spoke to a couple of neighbors about it, they reported seeing the same phenomenon.
It was a modern building, built in the 60's, but it was located very close to the town's old hospital, where the morgue was still located in the basement.

and dogs?
Cats are probably smarter than dogs. The can pretend to be emotional. A dog is driven by instinct and eats until it bursts.Dogs are less primal. They like more human attention than cats. Cats can be and are more take or leave emotionally.
