Amazon was going to hire the majority of their people from OUTSIDE her district?

Absolutely. She saved the neighbourhood. We did a similar thing with Walmart in our old Toronto neighbourhood, when they tried to build on the old Film Studio Property. Amazon was asking for $9 billion in free infrastructure to locate in New York.

The neighbourhood city would have had to build roads, subways, and transport systems to bring 25,000 people to and from work 3 times a day. As well as transportations system for the shipment of goods to and from the hub. The tax dollars to pay for the infrastructure would have come out of the pockets from the people in that neighborhood and their taxes would go up, because NYC told Amazon they didn't have to pay for it.

Not to mention, the construction of the campus would have displaced the current residents and businesses. And changed the entire character of one of the last working class neighborhoods in New York. The people who lived there now, would no longer be able to live there if Amazon moved in. They would be pushed further away from the lives they've always known, and would have received no little to no economic benefit for it.

In our neighbourhood, building a Walmart would replace high paying movie studio jobs (some of the highest paying blue collar jobs in the city), with minimum wage McJobs. The city had promised us when they closed the Studio, that we would not lose those good paying jobs. We fought that and won. A new movie studio went up on the property.

Not everything is about money, nor should it be. New York needs neighbourhoods which working people can afford to live in. These tax cuts for billionaires really are a race to the bottom for the American people.
