Florida prosecutors on Monday filed manslaughter charges against the man who gunned down a father following an argument over a parking space — a killing that led to renewed scrutiny over the state's "stand your ground" law.

Michael Drejka, 48, was being booked into the Pinellas County Jail with a bond issued at $100,000, said Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who was initially criticized for deciding not to bring charges in the case.

Drejka had remained out of the public eye while the sheriff forwarded the investigation to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office for a final review.

The fatal July 19 shooting of Markeis McGlockton, a 28-year-old black man, at a Circle A convenience store in Clearwater was captured on surveillance video and led to protests over why Drejka, who is white, could kill the father of three and claim self-defense.

You misspelled 'attacker' in the thread title.

The incident unfolded when McGlockton, his girlfriend Britany Jacobs, and their three young children pulled into a store's lot and parked in a handicapped spot.

As McGlockton went inside with his 5-year-old son, Drejka began questioning Jacobs about the space and the pair got into an argument, police said. The surveillance video showed McGlockton emerging from the store and immediately shoving Drejka to the ground.

In response, Drejka pulled a gun and shot McGlockton in the chest, police said, although it appeared the young father was stepping away from him. He later died at the hospital.

There is no audio with the video and it's unclear what words may have been exchanged between the men.
Well it's a start

Any chance you could show us a picture of the instigator of the physical attack when he was 12 years old? And the old man...the one who was attacked...just put up a picture of the Sith Lord from Star Wars will suffice.

Word of advise....keep your hands to yourself....do not attack another person....you never know if he or she is armed...control your anger because anger gets more people killed than any man made weapon....

There is already an established thread on this explaining why people are for or against the charges. Perhaps you should merge both threads. Nobody is going to want to rehash what they already said.

You lose your claim of self defense when you escalate the use of force or if you continue when the original attacker breaks off. Drejka did both.

As another poster mentioned 'keeping your hands to yourself' and is basically true enough....Drejka should have also kept his nose to his own business instead of arguing over the parking space that started it. McGlockton was defending his girlfriend. Either way here is 'woulda, shoulda, coulda's' that contributed to the problem.

BUT Drejka had a history of being the aggressor in other situations and had also shown a gun previously......this time he used it.

Drejka has remained largely a mystery to the public in the weeks since the shooting. The Tampa Bay Times reported last week that he has been the accused aggressor in four incidents since 2012, including two in which he was reported to have shown a gun. He was not arrested in any of the cases and does not have a criminal history in Florida.

Maybe Florida needs to rethink some of their laws and handling of those laws since they haven't been having too good of a record lately
