Mamdani Shuts Down Hotel Junk Fees

That's isn't the point. The point is those fees will be transparent up front. The customer will now know exactly what the hotel will cost instead of being blindsided when they receive the bill at checkout.

Use a credit card and challenge non disclosed fees, you'll win every time

This is actually a good idea, probably the first one he's had. This has been a huge complaint from tourists here in Las Vegas. They'll book a "deal" for $50 a night at a hotel and then when they check out find out they're actually paying $90 night due to added on hospitality fees, facility fees, or entertainment fees, whatever they choose to call them, for the amenities offered at the hotel that may not have even used.

They don’t really have to shut down the junk fees. They just have to add them to the base, and advertise the total as the cost of the room.

That's what they are doing as far as I understand. It's worded oddly.

For me it's curiosity regarding if the fees are corporate internal or mandated by local government.

A mix of both. There’s all sorts of occupancy fees and taxes - some of the local blue areas are the worst! - but I think the problem is around so-called “resort fees.”

For example, I stayed in Vegas at a very nice hotel that was $135 a night - a great deal. But the resort fee was $60, bringing it up to $195. By the time you finished with that and all the local and state taxes, the cost was close to $250.

And the resort fee includes a bunch of ridiculous things - like being able to use the room phone for local calls (cause nobody has a cell phone), using the swimming pool (shouldn’t that be part of the hotel deal?), a daily newspaper to your door, etc.

Yep. This creates more competition. The fees should line items on the receipt or invoice during checkout. Even gas stations display the taxes per gallon on the pump.
