New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani drew the ire of the Italian American community after a resurfaced social media post by the self-described democratic socialist denigrating a statue of Christopher Columbus.

Mamdani's X account posted a picture of a left hand giving a middle finger to a Columbus statue in June 2020. The image was found and shared again this week on social media, bringing noteworthy attention to the five-year-old post. Above the photo, Mamdani wrote, “Take it down,” seemingly calling for the statue’s removal.

Italian Americans represent a significant ethnic group in the New York City metropolitan area. An estimated 2.6 million people of Italian heritage live in the Big Apple. When Mamdani's old post resurfaced, many Italian American organizations and individuals rebuked it, according to multiple sources.

Angelo Vivolo, president of the Columbus Heritage Coalition, was critical of Mamdani’s comments and told the New York Post they were “disrespectful to the Italian American community.”

Comment:
Do you think that the Democrat Party will try to remove Mamdani from the ballot?
Or do you think that the Democrats believe that he can win?
Mamdani is part of the New Democrat Party.

Frankly, the so-called Democrat Party of today would have no problem removing and destroying the statues of any historical figures in the United States today and they would probably love to put a statue of Lenin on the White House lawn.
Over time, they would also be happy to put forth a figure of the Islamic quarter moon.
As for the statue of Columbus, I never understood why a statue of him is up, as he never actually discovered what we now call the United States (the lower 48), just some islands in the Caribbean. The first European to land on what is now the lower 48, was Juan Ponce de Leon in 1517, so there should be one of him in town squares.
Also, if you want to really be accurate in having a statue of a discoverer of what became the United States, a statue of a Native American could be erected and cited as the first persons who set foot on this soil.

Nope. He won the primary fair and square. Now the Dems have to live with him.

Both parties are more extreme, more violent, more hateful, and more racist.

The MAGA party is far more racist.

The entire country has become more and more polarized the past 25 years.

The Republican Party is not about racial hatred, the Democrat Party is all about racial hatred.

He isn't going anywhere no matter what Cuomo throws at the wall hoping it sticks is what I think.

It's only a matter of time until Mamdani gets the horse head is his bed.

Blacks , Muslims Indians and Jews of the time period did the same thing as Columbus.

I hope that he changed he was younger, even though it was only five years ago. But hating Christopher Columbus is something that actually some on the right wing do as well.

Mamdani is right to say he is New York City first when asked if he would visit Israel…. all the other candidates said they would and we’re pretty weird about appeasing Netanyahu

Anyway it’s really upsetting to see the picture. Let’s hope Mamdani changes his view toward Columbus
