I grew up in hand-me-downs. It allowed us to have a single income family where my mother stayed at home. Once my brothers and I were done with stuff (much of which we got from our cousins) it went on to our cousins. It helped keep a lot of budgets balanced.

My parents would politely disagree. My father was a tobacco sharecropper in the early 1950s but developed emphysema and had to quit farming. General Electric's built Appliance Park in the mid 1950s and he moved to the city to work in their factory thanks to his younger brother working there first. It worked out so well that at the end of the decade, they had me in 1960. My Dad retired from there when I was in college.
