Making kids repeat early grades.

My older brother and younger sister both had to repeat first grade. My brother because he missed a month of school due to pneumonia. My sister because she didn't participate much in her class due to shyness. Neither ever recovered. My sister suffered depression, my brother anger. They should have made up their deficiencies in summer school so they could move ahead with their class. Hopefully this practice has ended.
What part of failure do you not understand?

My G. Grandson is off to a fine start. He's just in Kindergarten and it's amazing how well he reads.

That said I had him in a learning (not learing) daycare for three years and he picked-up a lot of good habits there.

As long as I am able to help he won't ever see the inside of a public school.
Where did you get your education?

When I enlisted in the Maqrines, I tested well enough to be guaranteed MOS (2841 Ground Radio Repair). I did poorly in High School (especially math) and I failed the first week of Basic Electronics.

The instructors told all of us who failed, "if we fail again, our guaranteed MOS was gone."

I don't know how the others faired. I honestly don't remember.

But I didn't fail another week.

Standards matter.

Never heard of 'em.

Absolutely correct!

What do you do with entire CLASSES that can't master the course material as we have in many inner city schools? I guess you have a school full of 6th graders or whatever. At least none of them will suffer from self esteem problems for being held back.

Sound advice....Such gifted children should be away from the also-rans as they will always try to drag them down.
I assure you I was not brilliant. My school at the time double promoted a number of kids, including one who had failed first grade earlier.
