Why do we need an umpire? This is archaic and allows the hitters to be unfairly penalized by human error. This also allows the perfect pitch to be called a ball. We have a strike zone clearly delineated. There is no need for human intervention, which can wrong at crucial times.

Why should a base stealer ruled out at second be reviewed by replay and overturned, but not a called third strike?

There was a time when home plate umpires were needed, they just aren't anymore.

been that way since 1876....

The only way baseball can be great again is if the fucking owners stop paying them millions to allow the small market teams to be on the same level playing field as the big market teams like the fucking Yankees and dodgers.

Good pitch, though pine as I might for the good old fjords, I can't recall such a time. Anywho, assuming you're right, how about having an enforcer there instead? Batter throws the bat? Enforcer bot chucks the batter twenty feet towards the dugout..

I think this will happen, baseball loves tradition, as they have more of it than all of the other sports combined, but if they want to boost those TV ratings, this kind of change could help do it.

MLB is still "studying" automatic balls and strikes. They've been using it in the minors but MLB says there are still "technical issues" so not ready for 2025.

You still need a home plate umpire for all the judgement calls they have to make like hit by pitch, catcher interference, safe or out at the plate etc. But agreed too many critical mistakes take wins away from the rightful winner. That is the Cardinal Sin of officiating.

As a review tool only. Let's keep baseball human. It could stop the bench clearing brawls going to AI if a controversial call on balls and strikes needs to be decided. We need human umpires or the game would not be the same. Plus AI isn't flawless either.

I agree with this. Just have it make a 'blip' noise when the ball passes through the strike zone. Instant replay has stopped all the silly arguing at first base. Do the same at the plate.

It got tiresome to see clowns like Lou Pinella, Billy Martin and Earl Weaver throw a fit, kick dirt, take the base off the moorings, and just generally act like immature brats

The line umpire in tennis is sitting in a chair and checking the video on a close call.

Enforcer Bots. I'm tellin' ya!

No more time wasted arguing. Obey the blip noise or earn instant corporal punishment.. Yeehaw!

The way you really make baseball great again is to level the playing field for small-market teams. When a single Yankees player makes more than the entire Pittsburgh Pirates squad, that's a problem. Socialism is only permissible in a small closed loop, but that's what is needed. I was a big Pirates fan in the 1970s when home-grown players would be with the team their entire careers. That all changed with free agency. Today the Pirates are just farm teams for the bigger teams. Case in point: Gerrit Cole pitching tonight for the Yankees. You know damn well Paul Skenes will take off as soon as his current contract is over. Had the old system remained, I would have driven my kids 6 hours to Pittsburgh to see games all those years. But no way would I do it when their best players go to other teams all the time.

Umpire:
Listen, yesterday that was a ball, tomorrow it might be a ball, but today it's a strike.
I have no problem with that.

Nope, without umpires, this sort of thing would not be possible

It's what makes it great.

The unions destroyed baseball after the last strike.

Things will never be the same again.

Basically, everyone is happy and making tons of money, EXCEPT, for the fans of small market teams, fans that no one cares about anyway.

At a minimum, coaches need a ball/strike challenge for the 8th or 9th inning. Just like in football coaches need a 4th quarter challenge on penalty calls/non calls. Too many games are decided by bad calls and that should never happen as good as our video coverage of the games are now.

62 players in baseball made more money than the entire Detroit Tigers roster, which I believe was only $19 million dollars, but late into October that kind of roster will not stand up to the Dodgers, Yankees, or Mets, all of whom have more money than they know how to spend. Pretty impressive what they accomplished though but yes, the heavyweights have unlimited bullpens and quality starters and sluggers.
