MAGAts love to rant about DEI so they work it into every conversation regardless of the OP topic. How did this get to be a rant about teachers and public school? In the 70s, the average STARTER house cost 3.5 times yearly income. It's now up to over 5 times that. It's definitely different--even for those who have worked hard.
Yes, housing cost is a major problem. Back in the day, a "starter home" was a two-bedroom, one bath. Too many houses are McMansions in the half million dollar range. A condo, duplex (rare too), or modular home is cheaper.
The sad fact is that the best paying jobs are also in the highest cost of living areas.
An odd phenomena after 9/11 was a trend by Yuppies (remember them?) taking demotions or lower paying jobs to move out of the city or suburbia and to smaller cities or rural areas. They realized working 60+ hour weeks chasing the Almighty Buck wasn't as important as spending more time with their families. Smaller cities and rural areas also come with lower costs.
Although Trump's war has increased those costs, smaller cities and rural areas still remain cheaper than the urban sprawl of a metroplex.
Best of luck to your kids and all other young people struggling in Trump's America.
