I think we all remember the hassle the Patent and Trademark office gave the Redskins for having an "offensive" name.

Well today the US Supreme Court weighed in on the issue of "offensive" trade marks.

An Asian Band called the "Slants" was denied a trademark for their bands name and pursued the case to SCOTUS.

In a rare unanimous decision the court ruled in the bands favor. And it looks like the Redskins will be able to retain their trademark as well.

Supreme Court sides with The Slants, rules ban on offensive names is unconstitutional

As a lifelong fan, I've always defended the name. A few years ago a broadcaster put out a video about how he's breaking up with the team for now, because on top of the humiliation of embarrassing seasons and embarrassing offseason moves, he's now even being called a racist for supporting his team. I can't find it right now but it's hilarious. The franchise is a disaster, and I can't defend them as long as the current ownership remains in place. Part of me was hoping this trademark cancellation might stick, just to piss off Dan Snyder and make him change things. But Dan got his way again, and the term "Redskin" will continue to represent humiliation and defeat under his tenure.

Oh Hogs and Posse.... those were the days.

Awesome, go piss up a rope all you SJWs and PC sissies.

I would never take for granted what the league itself will say on the matter.
The league will go where the money is. And despite the disasters and humiliations of the last 20+ years, the Redskins are still one of the most profitable franchises.

political Correctness can sit and spin...

A few years back (or so) California banned such names. There were several high schools made up primarily of native Americans who had selected the nickname "Redskins" for themselves but were forced to change their names.

Ditto. I grew up in the DC suburbs and remember George Allen and the Sonny Jurgensen, Billy Kilmer days. And of course The Joe Gibbs era, Riggo, the hogs, the Posse and the smurfs. Snyder has cast a pall over the Redskins ever since he took over. I never believed for a minute the Redskins would change their name but I'm sure glad the SCOTUS showed some common sense.

After the RG3 disaster, firing McCloughan, Deion Sanders, Haynesworth, McNabb, Zorn, Vinny Cerrato, Spurrier, and lots I'm probably forgetting... I don't care if they change the name. I'm tired of hoping we can scrape out more than 6 wins.

Come on guys, this is a speech issue, not sports. Thanks.

I have disliked the 'Skins since they took my Broncos to school in Super Bowl XXII to the tune of 42-10!

As for the SCOTUS decision, it's about time the SJW cult got slapped down.

Kind of on the same note, I wonder if a company's logo has a Confederate flag in it would be legal.

/---- What an idiotic thing to happen. A legal immigrant Mexican wore a sombrero to HS on Cinco de Mayo and was suspended because his sombrero was culturally offensive to Mexicans.
