Local ordinance irony.

Last March we got a little show/hail in San Jose. It melted as soon as it hit the sidewalks and pavement.

Property owners must have their sidewalks cleared of snow and ice by noon of the day following a snow or ice storm.

This is so that the very people that stomped the snow into an impossible to remove layer of ice in the first place won't slip as they repeatedly trod over the sidewalk.

you will find similar ordinances in most major cities that have been on the books for decades if not centuries,,

you might even find clauses in some home insurance policies about not paying out personal injury claims if the sidewalk has not been cleared in a certain time frame,,

Public easement laws are bullshit.
Its considered public property, but the property "owner" is responsible.
I agree we need public easements, but the local ordinance should be responsible for it since its public.
do you want government workers in front of your house everyday??

I understand that. But if its considered YOUR property, why does everyone else have access to it?
I mean, like this case, them telling you to manicure public property or probably face fines or something.. Just doesnt seem right.

I lived in a town that planted a city owned tree on the public easement of every home. That city cared for every tree and provided leaf pick up every fall. One of the few things that I saw that was really beneficial.

it is and isnt considered your property, but because we live in a civilized society and that part of the property connects you with the rest of us you have a certain responsibility to keep it reasonably safe for others,,

why did you use the word "manicure" when its clearly a safety issue??

I meant it generally. Mowing, trimming, power washing, shoveling etc.
It isnt my responsibility to keep others safe on public property. Thats the govts job.

the discussion is about a safety issue not general yard work,,

its not the governments job to keep anyone safe,,

but it is their job to keep people safe from other people,,
hence the ordinance,,

now I have lived my whole life under this ordinance and not once ever saw it enforced to the point of fine but I am sure in some of the rich areas it has where youre shamed into compliance,,

but most times people just show respect for others when they live in dense areas and youre the only prick on the street that wont shovel the sidewalk,,

now personally I am OK with privatizing the roads and highways along with the taxs that pay for them and going back to dirt roads,,

but thats just me,,

My original comment was a general comment.
So then who is supposed to take care of public property, if not the government? And why do we pay them taxes to do so, if its not their job?
I am too. Roads would probably be kept in better shape.

I have no problem taking care of all the property in front on my property all the the way to the center line oif the road if I dont have to pay the taxs, and would even keep the block I live on free of litter and other unsightly objects,,

if everyone had that attitude we wouldnt need government input,,

but sadly we have useless fuckers that think its the governments job to do everything for them and then ***** like women when they dont like the way they do it,,

one problem I see if roads are privatized is they will be more strict than government because theres profit involved so we should be careful what we wish for,,

That only works because home owners are generally more responsible than the rest of the population.
It's opposite with mail boxes, I believe. You own it but you lease it back to the USPS. Which is why it's a Federal Crime to mess with them.

Kids that go around busting them up don't know what kind of trouble they can bring down on themselves if the USPS ever bothers to enforce anything

I have a Polaris 500 4-wheeler with a plow but i still don't want to have to mess with clearing/salting a sidewalk.
I have a Ranger 570 with a plow, but I only use it when the snow is deep to get to the shop for the tractor. Six inches or more and those quads just don't get it done to my satisfaction. LOL, when you're pushing snow with an angled blade and the next thing you know, you're on the other side of the road, it's time for the tractor.

Nearby in Dem crazytown the city took ownership of YOUR trees on YOUR property to protect them from YOU. If you dare trim or cut them down you get fined thousands of dollars. If you don't clean up the leaves, FINED!

I've heard some of those horror stories about Lake Tahoe area. Home owners who have been fined for removing trees from their own property without official approval. SMH, government over reach.
