Sunan Abu Dawud: Muhammad married Aisha when she was 6 years old and consummated that marriage after her first period at age 9.
Sharia and the Hadith are the legal guidelines for Muslims.

As for "the times," those times have long past and now modern societies are very aware of the need for young people to achieve both sexual, as well as "mental" maturity before entering into relationships. What was done in the 7th century is now, in the civilized world, considered barbaric and primitive. However, Islam has NOT advanced since its founding and its religion and laws remain mired down in centuries old beliefs and laws that need to end and the reason it has not advanced and never will is because its founder, declared himself to be the last prophet (although, no self-respecting deity would have such a creep as its founder) and folded his religious ideology with politics and a war machine.
