Included in that 1% figure however was Koreans and Chinese whose families have lived in Japan for decades and for many reasons have never become citizens.

Those were all Asians. Now imagine if Japan opens its border allowing Haitians, Somalians, and Venezuelan to immigrate there. Japanese would go ballistic. Becoming Japanese citizen is extremely difficult for a reason. Japanese don’t want to be a minority in their own country. Applicant must be financially self sufficient, speak, read, write Japanese, and pledge allegiance to Japan. Japan don’t hand out citizenship like if you’re caller 10 in this country.
