Exactly. We can't be forced to like people that we don't like.

We don't have to like everyone. For the record, I don't really like anyone.

But, in a civilized, polite society, we can expect to walk down the street without being confronted by people expressing their hatred of us.

Simple laws of etiquette dictate that we behave in a manner (at least publicly) that doesn't make those around us uncomfortable. It's just the decent thing to do.

Trying to run someone over and shouting hate abuse at them is a crime. It's also hate. So it's a hate crime.
