The OP article link was quite informative, but hardly justifies the confusing OP headline. Peruvian society is certainly uniquely segmented and difficult for North Americans to relate to. One cannot really expect the “liberal” or for that matter any U.S. mass media to care very much or make much sense of the recent tragic events there.

Even I, with family in Chile, who once had a close acquaintance who lived in Cusco for years and married a native Indian Quechua-speaking Peruvian (before “Shining PATH” grew strong) haven’t been clear on the recent events there. Peru is not at all the same as, for example, Brazil, Argentina, Chile or Venezuela.
