Abraham Lincoln wasn't a "liberal" either: He was a Republican who held the U.S. Constitution in high regard. It was those Democrats who embraced the institution of slavery. Liberals also prolonged the Great Depression, it took a World War to bring us out of that.

"Liberal" and "Republican" are not at all mutually exclusive, especially in the mid-19th century. The Republican Party at its inception took a strong stand for Abolition, which is a Liberal ideal.
