Simply put, the wholly owned subsidiary of Liberalism, Incorporated, the main stream media has disavowed it's legitimate purpose....
"The job of the newspaper is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

The famous quote is about a hundred years old and can be traced to the work of Finley Peter Dunne.

It was the promise that entitled them to special recognition in the First Amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

...and assumed a new role, commensurate with their political purpose:

mushroom management
A management philosophy prescribing to the theory that to best motivate your employees, you must at all times:

1. Keep them in the dark.
2. Feed them full of s**t.
Urban Dictionary: mushroom management

Yet....one of the elitist fools let the cat out of the bag:

"Kerry to the Media: Cover Terrorism Less, So 'People Wouldn't Know What's Going On’

In his remarks in Bangladesh on Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry explicitly asked the media to cover terrorism less, so "people wouldn't know what's going on." The line also drew applause from the audience.

He then suggested, "Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn't cover it quite as much. People wouldn't know what's going on."

Liberalism: the doctrine of those meant to be kept stupid.
