Yes, when you register to vote you must show ID and prove citizenship.

For me it was done via census. Never had to show anything.

In many red states, all you need is a driver's license also. Mail-in ballots require "asking and telling". You need to pass a test to get a DL, so it is a safety measure that I do not oppose. At one time we needed a voter's ID. Why no more?
