The increase in speed, power and accuracy of the new generation of killer missiles pretty much eliminates threat of large sea going war ships.
Hell even smaller and faster ships are no longer safe.

Unless some comes up with a bubble field ( the power plant necessary for that would never float) .... No amount of defense can be totally effective against a multiple launch of dozens of hypersonic projectiles at the same time

Time to re-think.....
Maybe the new battleships all need to be submarines?

That assumes we know about the countermeasures the US Navy has up their sleeve to defend against the new missiles and drones.

Get back to me when someone actually manages to damage a US carrier severely

I want to believe:

I'd still like to see a Iowa class battleship pound the Iranian coast.

USS New Jersey.

Anti missile lasers are game changer

Hell, if they even manage to scratch one.

When was the last time a Carrier in the US Navy sustained any kind of combat damage after WWII?

New improved, A.I driven missile intercepts. Have them on board and ships and carriers will remain an even stronger force.

Th future of warfare is A.I from soldier to drones and interceptors. May the best hackers win...

A counter-measure need only miss once, and billions of dollars of military investment is at the bottom of the sea.

The OP stands.

I've always wondered, what would be the result of a nuclear powered ship sinking after being hit by a powerful missile. Would it be a sea-based Chernobyl or they have systems capable of shutting down the reactor before it goes to the bottom?

Depends on the size of the inbound munition in question.

Soviet anti-carrier tactics were based on long range missiles diving in at Mach 2-3 and with 1 ton warheads.

smaller stuff would need dozens of hits to do actual damage.

The reactors are smaller, designed to scram if in trouble, and any runaway reaction would be quenched by the seawater entering the reactor systems either before or after the meltdown.

You may find out in the next few weeks when Trump carries out Bibi's "Attack Iran Now!" order

I think Iran is a redline for China and the USSR

It's vital to connecting them to Africa and whatever's left of Europe

I doubt Israel wants this to happen, as any retaliation would be against Israel in the hopes of getting other Arab states to jump in to save them.

Same thing Saddam tried in 1991.

Who do you think is calling the shots??? Like every other action in the ME, Bibi does not care what the cost is in American lives or treasure.

This time, however, Israel might suffer irreparable damage. The Iron Dome was swiss cheese the last time

Best thing would be regime Change in Israel and America

Sorry, but I don't go for the ITS TEH JOOOOOOOSSSSS logic.

It's old, tired and played out.

Well you might clear the fog one day.

Why did we attack Iraq after 9/11?

Because after Afghanistan we were looking for another terrorist supporting government to get rid of.

A bad idea, but not because of TEH JOOOZ

How close is Iran to having -- the bomb??????

They've been 2 weeks away since the dissolution of the USSR

That's only one reason they need to go. The $$ they spend supporting terrorists and other shit governments is the main reason.

Their own people don't want their government anymore, getting rid of the Mullahs is a net positive.
