You may have noticed me taking some leftist positions lately, but I am still a conservative. I just dropped the cult and the jingoism. I let Trump get in the way of my faith and my values, and it has put me on thin ice with a longtime friend. I'm not a leftist, I am taking a more classical liberal/libertarian stance now. I let years old stances creep back in and I am addressing that now.

Consider this my fair notice to you all.

(P.S. Yes, I'm a Metroid geek)

You are either a MAGA supporter or you’re a Bolshevik, Soviet communist! There is no middle ground anymore

You mean the video game ??

MAGA is nothing but a slogan. It's the tribalism I so steadfastly despise. I support Trump but not that way.

And yes, the video game.

You sound weak and gay.

Stop being vague. Be specific on what you are “liberal” on and what you disagree with in the MAGA agenda.
I'm not weak, but I am gay. So there's that.

This whole thing about tariffs and deporting college kids. Tariffs are tantamount to bullying. It's brutish. It doesn't suit the current macroeconomic dynamic.

Deporting college kids for protesting (if that's indeed all they did). This disregard for First Amendment rights.

Deporting anyone with suspected ties to TdA/MS-13. We already have one example of a mistake being made. Obey proper procedure and due process, I don't see that happening.

And all the executive orders. If he would obey the Constitution when crafting them, I wouldn't have a problem. But all these lawsuits (agenda driven or not) shows me he is not adhering to the Constitution. There's a way we do things, and he's seemingly blowing past that. There are things only Congress can do that he's assumed he can do with Executive Power.

But that's it. I support his border policy for the most part.

They are deporting foreign radicals who promote hate speech and anti Semitism while supporting terrorist groups like Hamas and Isis

The tariffs by T are genius ; they are to get other countries with high tariffs to eliminate theirs and make an even playing field

But the import/export dynamic doesn't support these tariffs. He wants us to be a production country again, which we haven't been since the 70s and 80s.

That takes time. Longer than the four years Trump has in office. It relies on another Republican being elected to continue his policies. It's fraught with risk.

Of course it's risky. But if we don't do that, we lose our entire nation. We are already awash in debt, and we produce barely nothing. It's unsustainable

Meanwhile, the unsuspecting are blindsided by the shifting economic climate. Not all of the middle class will be able to adapt to it.

I'm worried about sacrificing the economic livelihoods of the commoners like us in America. I don't understand how some people can say they are willing to endure pain and hardship for a better country. Some of you can, some of you can't.

We're not wary of the collateral here. If you can minimize the impact, that's great, but the solution escapes me at the moment.

My kids are 25 and 28. They are independent by some miracle of God, but can only rent an apartment with other people bc there's no way they could afford one on their own. They are Trump voters because they don't have even close to the access I had at their age to the "American dream"....even home ownership.

Many people are willing to sacrifice the economy (within reason) now to see their kids have a chance at some kind of life.

ETA: they are both college graduates with professional jobs in the career they trained for. I'm very proud of them. But they can't make it.

I admire your selflessness. But people like me, and my grandmother who I care for, are on fixed incomes. I cannot sacrifice our economic stability for a better country. I would if my grandmother were able and more cognizant. When she could manage her finances, she was unstoppable. The great recession of 2008 didn't faze her. But now, I'm the one with the checkbook.

I'm sure there are scenarios like mine all over the US.

Honestly, Sue, I don't know what to think or how to react. I voted for Trump, but now I'm worried.
