Many people during the early history of the Christian church had a problem in comprehending that the "Kingdom of God"....i.e., the Church established by the truth that Jesus was the Messiah of prophecy (Matt.16) was and is a Spiritual Kingdom not a physical Carnal Kingdom. Just as the Christ described, "The Kingdom of God is within YOU......not around you, nor is it visible like any other kingdom on earth...." -- Luke 17:21
The Jews of Jesus' time was expecting a "carnal kingdom" much like the kingdom ruled by David (especially since prophecy had the Messiah sitting on David's throne)......they expected the Messiah to come swoping in on his white horse and rescue all of Isarel from their enemies like the Roman Empire under protection of God.
Of course carnalism is an enmity against the Spiritualism instructed by the Holy Spirit of God. One cannot possess both a caranl mind (as that is where one's spirit rests in his/her mind as that is where the body is directed in all its functionality) and a spiritual mind in obeying the edicts of God at the same instant.
Throughout all the N.T. there is a common theme ............the Kingdom of God is a spiritual Kingdom not a carnal kingdom.
It (the Kingdom) is not of this world. (John 18:36). It is a Spiritual Kingdom (Luke 17:20-21)
The O.T. prophecies foretold of the coming Kingdom and it would be established historically during the fourth Empire. A Time period when Rome was the fourth Empire during the time of Jesus (Daniel 2:44)
Again Daniel declared it would be established during the days of the 4th Beast (empire) -- Daniel 7:23-27
At the birth of Jesus it was foretold that He would take up a kingdom without end (Luke 1:31-33)
Jesus declared the Kingdom of God was close. The prophecy of Daniel was being fulfilled, the time was at hand (Mark 1:14-15). The kingdom would come during the lifetime of those standing there hearing Jesus speak (Mark 9:1)
There are many alive today that still wrestle with the reality that the kingdom of God is not a literal physical (carnal) Kingdom. Some are still looking to establish a literal physical Kingdom on earth.........Some Jews, Some calling themselves Premilllennialist Christians......still Looking for Jesus to literally sit on the throne of David in Jerusalem......Some who declare that God (Allah) is on their side.......attempting to establish a literal physical kingdom that engulfs the entire world....etc.
All these ideas are carnal and are at enmity with the SPIRITUAL truth established in the Holy Scriptures.
Greetings
It is hard for me to try to explain some of what I do understand, so just use the question that is asking to give an understanding about this would, and the one to come John 18: 36
I search the scriptures to identify what is carnal
The Spiritual Mind
A carnal person is a spiritually immature Christian or the mind of an infant, the scriptures say Only to those of mature faith can he impart God's wisdom, if Imay
In 1 Cor 2:6-16 (KJV) world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to naught: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery,
even the hidden
wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known
it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed
them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth
no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Cor 15:44-46 (KJV) It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam
was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that
was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
Heb 5:14 (KJV) But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age,
even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
1 Cor 214 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Cor 2:4-5 (KJV) And my speech and my preaching
were not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
1 Cor 215 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us
Romans 8:8-16 (KJV) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
And if Christ
is in you, the body
is dead because of sin; but the Spirit
is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
