Leftwing Media "Analysts" Are Baffled by the "Mysterious" One-Year Plunge in Crime.

Spoiler: It's Only a Mystery to Propagandists Who Won't Admit the Obvious

How did crime plunge so suddenly -- so "unexpectedly," if you will -- the moment Weekend at Biden's was shuffled out of the White House to be replaced by a law-and-order, deportation-minded president?
The leftwing media insists this is a giant mystery whose depths cannot be plumbed.
They're lying, Drew Holden reports.
Crime--particularly violent crime--is down dramatically over the last year. Cities like New York, Memphis, and Washington, D.C. where murders, carjacking, and theft plagued the public in the wake of COVID-19, were all found to have experienced double-digit decreases in violent crime. Experts, the legacy media, and many Democrats are scratching their heads.
As a recent New York Times headline declared, "What's Behind the Staggering Drop in the Murder Rate? No One Knows for Sure."
Other outlets and commentators have been similarly befuddled. New York Magazine dubbed it "The Mysterious Plunge in America's Murder Rate." Experts "said it's too early to tell what is prompting the change," the Associated Press intoned; the Washington Post cited a liberal expert who cautioned that there was "no silver bullet" to make sense of the data. For TIME, the drop in violent crime "can be attributed to a kaleidoscope of factors, none of which can singularly or definitively account for the decline." CNN shrugged that "it's nearly impossible to zero in on any one reason" for the drop. "The bottom line: Experts aren't sure why violent crime continues to fall," Axios reported
Not until 21 paragraphs into the Times piece do the authors give us a hint about how it happened: experts "do not wholly discount" policing, particularly "the multipronged effort that many cities mounted against violence in the past few years, including hot-spot policing, summer jobs for youth, cognitive behavioral therapy and focused deterrence, an approach that calls for paying sustained attention to the small number of people at highest risk of committing violence."
In other words, violent crime is in freefall across the country thanks in large part to better, more targeted policing aimed at restoring law and order. The biggest threat to our renewed ability to combat crime might be a legacy media hamstrung by the baggage of prior anti-police animus.

Read the whole thing. In case after case, crime is down because, get this, cops started enforcing the law, usually with federal help.

Commentary:
What Democrats have refused to accept is that police department that enlisted Federal help showed the highest gains in crime reduction.
Democrats deliberate failure to to accept this fact are responsible for the violence under the Obama and Biden administrations.
Great piece. Note re Baltimore: the city has lost ONE-THIRD of its population since 1977, which means its per-capita murder rate today is still higher than its elevated rate in those years. (Only per capita rates matter.)
why compare crime rates to the 1970s, or 1990s (or especially to the Covid years)? We should compare violent crime rates to 1959, or 1930, etc. Tolerating violent crime is a choice, notwithstanding Democrat lies that urban crime is inevitable (just like their lie that illegal immigration can't be stopped). Police presence, incarceration, and mandatory minimums can basically solve violent crime. The Times' fantasy that "cognitive behavioral therapy" played a substantial role, and other liberal fictions, are largely meaningless.
As usual Democrat politics along with the Quisling and complicit Media refuse to accept or admit the facts.
Its called 3 million illegals deported

The pandemic increased crime significantly in 2020 and now we are finally back to pre-pandemic levels.

So it seems politics had little to do with it.

“Make no mistake, violent crime was up under Donald Trump,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz warned in his first speech as Kamala Harris’ running mate.

“If you look this up at home,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claimed last month, “you will know that crime went down under Biden and crime went up under Trump. Why would America want to go back to the higher crime we experienced under Donald Trump?”

But the opposite is true: Between 2016 and 2020, violent crime fell by 17% under Trump — and soared by 43% under Biden between 2020 and 2022.

Of course, news outlets routinely assert that Americans are mistaken in believing that violent crime is rising.

On Monday, Axios had a typical headline: “New data shows violent crime dropping sharply in major U.S. cities.”
There are two measures of crime: One, the FBI’s NIBRS, counts the number of crimes reported to police yearly.

The other, the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, asks about 240,000 people each year whether they have been victims of crime, in an attempt to measure both reported and unreported crimes.

Violent crime statistics US
NY Post composite
Since 2020, these two measures have been highly negatively correlated: The FBI has been finding fewer instances of crime, but people are simultaneously answering in greater numbers that they have been victims.

We know that crime victims report only about 40% of violent crimes and 30% of property crimes to police.

Prior to 2020, the FBI and NCVS numbers generally moved together.

But every year from 2020 onward, these figures have moved in opposite directions.

For instance, in 2022, the FBI reported a 2.1% drop in violent crime, but the NCVS showed an alarming increase of 42.4% — the largest one-year percentage increase in violent crime ever reported by that measure.

Part of the reason is that law enforcement in the United States has collapsed.

Take, for example, cities like New York with more than 1 million people.

The FBI data shows arrest rates for reported violent crime in such cities plunged by more than half, from 44% in the five years before the COVID pandemic to just 20% by 2022 — the largest drop ever.

AHEM!

Biden was not President in 2020, Trump was president in 2020 when crime rates and murders soared upwards.

Your op is fudging numbers by giving Biden 2020, when 2020 with the highest murder rate in our history, was under Trump's reign?

Hey stupid. It's not a "one year drop in crime". The crime rate has been falling since lockdowns ended. 2024 saw a HUGE drop in crime. 2025 simply continued what was already happening under Biden. It wasn't just the USA either. Crime rates around the world declined in 2024, as the world finally got back to "normal" after the pandemic.

Trump had NOTHING to do with it.

Typical GASLIGHT THEATRE BULLSHIT from the demented LEFT.
They simply cannot cite the law and order policies of the Trump administration.
🙄

Crime has been falling for about a decade
Except in democrat cities where reporting and prosecutions have fallen. Consider crime has dropped roir the past 40 years at the same time millions of guns were sold

Crime rose in democrat cities not because of Trump. defund police no bail DAs refusing to prosecute and sanctuary cities caused an exlosion of crime
Crime rose in red states a bit higher than blue states.. now what?

Democrats cities in any state is where all the crime is. Thats where defend police DAs refusing to prosecute no bail and sanctuary cities attracted illegal crinminals. Dont fogret thats where balcks live who alone create 53% of ll murder and violent crime. Democrats in control means more crime

I hope this crime reduction will come to my city. The blacks are still shooting up the place. :(
