Bean, 67, and
former boyfriend Kiah Loy Lawson, 25, were charged with having sex with a 15-year-old boy at a Eugene hotel in 2013. Each was charged with two counts of third-degree sodomy, a felony, and third-degree sexual abuse, a misdemeanor....Circuit Judge Jay McAlpin dismissed the case without prejudice, which means the state could refile charges....Lane County Chief Deputy District Attorney Erik Hasselman said the state had a strong case with witnesses who would testify that Bean was present and had sex. "In fact, he was the one who rented the hotel room," Hasselman said....The case was complicated by Bean's offer to settle the case through a civil compromise.
In some cases, the law allows a defendant to compensate a victim and have charges dismissed. Such a resolution requires a judge's approval....Although terms of
the offer was sealed by Circuit Judge Charles Zennache, the prosecutor said Bean had offered the boy at least $200,000 to settle the case....
There was more to the offer, Hasselman said, but he declined to disclose further details.
