If the gop runs in 22 on defending an attempted insurrection/coup, they'd lose. But I don't think that's their plan. The question imo is whether in August/Fall a year from now, Trump is drawing crowds in the tens of thousnds, and if the gop House members have to run on the 20 election. They lost before, and I think they'd lose again.
I'm not sure what Cheney and Kinzinger hope to accomplish. Standing up for the cops is admirable, and obviously they don't want to be part of the Trump gop. But that sort of seems like a lonely, quixotic quest. Are they really moving the gop on from Trump to a more substantive place? Maybe. McCarthy looks even more like the loser we knew him to be when Boehner was speaker. Will gopers quietly slip off from Trump wagon?
