6. CONSERVATISM IN GREAT BRITAIN

Although Great Britain had been for years a home of representative government, its government in 1815 was far from democratic. The suffrage was so severly restricted by property qualifications that only about 5 percent of the adult males could vote.

That same year 257,257 sheep were exported to Britain. In 1846, another famine year, 480,827 swine and 186,483 oxen were exported to Britain.

The argument comes as congressional Republicans are on a crusade to slash funding for food stamps, which is now known as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). Just this week, the House Agriculture Committee approved a bill reauthorizing the program but at substantially reduced funding levels, so that 2 to 3 million low-income Americans, many of them children, would lose assistance.

The attack on food stamps doesn't reflect changes in the program. It reflects changes in the Republican Party and mainstream conservative ideology. | New Republic

What's your point? You are aware of the fact that the British "Corn" laws prevented Ireland from importing cheap American grain during the famine, aren't you? Of course you are't, moron. So much for "laizzes faire."

Actually, my point is to point out the historical definitions of 'Conservative' and 'Liberal' to make us all feel silly about everything we read in Politics today.

Happy Friday! :coffee:

No. What you tried to do is blame the conservative policy of laizzes faire for the Irish famine. That just goes to show what a despicable liberal sleaze bag you are.

The fact is true laizzes faire would have prevented the Irish famine. On the other hand, modern lib policy is saddling our children with debt and economic stagnation.

Actually, that's wrong. Exploit is too strong. Conservative policies just don't care when people starve.

Especially if profits and/or tax dollars are involved.

Who thinks rich people with low taxes and poor people begging in streets desperately in need of repair will be good for tourism?

Bullshit.

Monarchs are conservative.

Furthermore it was the conservative south which was to blame for more than half a million deaths during the civil war in America.

By the was "Laissez-Faire" policies OFTEN demand government intervention, when workers rise up.

Actually a good case could be made that slavery was Laissez-Faire capitalism. Slavery was ended by government intervention and we know what most of the republicans/teabaggers here feel about government intervention
