I don't know any Australian news ladies. But I have participated in a number of truly peaceful protests/demonstrations and I have never felt the need for any kind of personal protection. We were careful not to obstruct either vehicle or pedestrian traffic, careful not to interfere with anybody's business or break any laws.

When we left, the area was clean with our people picking up and disposing of any trash they saw.

Passing out face shields does not suggest peaceful protest.

I lurked outside the perimeters of a few TEA Party protests.

At no time did I feel unsafe, believe that my face needed to be covered, or that the crowd was going to need to be forcibly disbursed.

Yes I participated in several Tea Party demonstrations. Invariably some leftists would show up pretending to be one of us and holding hateful signs to make us look bad for any media that showed up. If any of our own brought such signs they were asked to put them away and they always did. The leftists ignored us and those requests. We did what we could to mitigate the harm. Of course as soon as the media left so did the leftists.

But we were extremely careful not to litter, not to break any laws, to not cause any problems/issues for business owners or anybody else. To block a sidewalk or street would have been unthinkable. No one ever had to feel intimidated or threatened in any way by us.

And no. No masks or face shields were ever necessary or even considered.

Are you really that naive? I suppose you can't arrest somebody for having car burglary tools in a parking lot either. Or walking into a bank wearing a face mask and brandishing a weapon. (FYI such people can be arrested, and if it is reasonable to believe there was intent to commit a crime, can be convicted.)
