Well again.... What was the alternative? Sit in Syria until the end of time? What exactly was our long term game plan?
When we first backed the Kurds, the situation was very different. Turkey was never super favorable. But they also where not all that aggressive. At the same time, we were operating under the idea that Assad would be removed, and a new government formed, where the Kurds would likely make a peaceful agreement.
That's all gone.
Turkey had a coup the failed, and became very aggressive. Whether they should have blamed the PKK or not, doesn't matter. The reality is they became very aggressive.
Similarly, Putin rolled troops into Syria, and started backing the Assad regime. Whether we should have allowed that or not, doesn't matter. The fact is, Putin is in Syria, and backing Assad.
So... what exactly is our game plan? If we stayed in Syria.... to what end? The only way we can find a peaceful solution, would be to either wipe out Turkey, or wipe out Assad and Russia.
If neither of those are an option..... then what is your solution? Just stay in Syria marching around between two hostiles? Sounds like Vietnam.
I don't think that's a good plan.
