Many of the bricklayers and concrete masons around here are from south of the border, but mostly H1B people. The hole digging and concrete people that did my pool were all H1B that my pool company gets through the system every year. I made sure they were, and I insisted the be legal or not on my property. Some of these crews are under the same thing, coming in for the season, leaving to go home around Christmas or before. I have no major problem with the H1B program. These are not what I call high skill jobs for the most part, though I have seen some brick crews that were artisan quality and much faster at their work, be it bricks or blocks, than the younger Americans being drawn toward these hard work in hot condition job situations. In contracting, time is money, and I am from an associated sales trade, so I have seen it, a lot. I also spent part of a summer working for a brick masonry contractor. It was brutal work, but I needed the money at the time, it was already known I would pull my load as required as long as I was willing to take the pay, and I did. Many now here are now only willing to take the pay, whether they are willing to bust ass all day or not.

I talk to contractors a lot, and they say nobody wants to work anymore. Many of them have cut back to smaller jobs they can handle with less people or no other people. It is not all, Hispanic people taking food out of natural born Americans mouths. Today's youth are on the weaker, more pampered side, preferring to learn skills that do not equate with hard physical labor. When I buy, I try to buy American, but I won't buy at half again the price and wait 3 times as long, just because young white and black American borns prefer a softer work environment, not exposed to the elements. I have a contractor that starts in the next week or so. He is good, but been behind. His helper quit after learning what to do, and got a job with the school system, inside, not much pay increase, but much better working conditions and better benefits, but the contractor has not been able to find anybody else, as all want to make what his experienced guy was making.
