Not confirmed dead but reports from the scene were not positive.

  • Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot on Friday morning in Nara, Japan, the country's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno has confirmed. Two shots can be heard in video footage of the incident.
  • Abe is in critical condition and emergency treatment is taking place, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest after he collapsed, according to an official from the Nara City Fire Department.
  • Police have arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of attempted murder and retrieved a gun, NHK reported.
  • Abe is the longest-serving Japanese Prime Minister in history. He stepped down as Prime Minister in 2020, citing health reasons.

The investigation and questions will be asked about the source, if the shooter was radicalized etc. I doubt a foreign government would be responsible, though, if they were, it would be designed in such a way as to be untraceable anyways if they knew what they were doing.

Certainly an act like this, if setup, would be by necessity conducted by those who knew what they were doing. The stakes would be far too high and with an unknown risk of response (such as Japan deciding their passive military policy is no longer feasible in honour of this man who was driving such an approach before he stepped down).

Oh, and potentially as an aside, I know it is technically a day late, but China just commemorated the 85th anniversary of the "July 7th Incident', which was the horrible atrocities the Japanese soldiers did to China in WWII. Unthinkable horrors that China and the world shouldn't forget for it's inhumanity.

This immediately begs the question of why the shooter would have needed to build a clumsy homemade gun. It looks like a crude type of shotgun but is short like a pistol. Oh... and he ISN'T DEAD yet. Way to go for clickbait...

The suspect is a former Maritime Self Defense Force member, according to Fuji TV.

I said that right in the oP not dead but sure looks bad.

Faux was running reruns from earlier, so I tuned into CNN late night. Their reporter almost seemed like he could barely keep a smiling grin off his face when talking about it. The prospect of someone assassinating a former head of state seemed a gleeful prospect to him.

Reports out of Japan are that his vital signs are all but nil. There are rumors that it may have been a set-up with deep sources.

Video from the scene shows him receiving CPR from several first responders.

Sources close to him have said that he is dead, but this is not confirmed yet.
