One of my coworkers is going to Japan with her family this summer. None of them have been there before. She asked me to put together a list of must-see places for limited time.

I would recommend seeing anything in South Korea or Japan. They are both wonderful places with lots of wondrous and fantastic sites and culture. From the cities to the rural areas, they both have a lot to offer for visitors.

They are only going to Japan, and they only have about a week.

I would visit Tokyo or a smaller city like Osaka. I would visit the toy company Takara or now called TakaraTomy. They created the original Transformers toys before Hasbro took over and called them Transformers and gave the robots personalities. :)

Osaka is not a small city.

Every city in the world is smaller than Tokyo.
I would visit the capitals like Seoul and Tokyo. there is so much to do and see in the big cities but there are also wonderful things to see and do in small cities.

Big cities are big cities, but smaller places have more character.

Isn’t Japan ungodly expensive?

I’d still like to visit someday, but I’ve heard it’s even more expensive then going to Europe

I agree. and the rural areas are interesting. you will see vending machines for everything everywhere in Japan. I will admit, Japan has more English language signs and speakers than South Korea. both have great outside food stalls and great convenience stores to get sandwiches and snacks. the currency exchange in Korea is easier to remember because one thousand Won usually equals about one dollar. both countries are very safe in terms of crime. the food in Korea is a bit spicy. the Japanese Karaoke is called Noraebang in Korea. I hope your friend and his or her family have a wonderful time in Japan! :)

Tokyo is very expensive. Seoul is very expensive too. you have to go to small and not popular places to get a good deal money-wise.

I enjoy getting on google maps and looking at random streets in streetview mode for world cities

I was surprised how drab and utilitarian most of Tokyo looked on street view. It looks very…. tired or worn out or something. Uniform and functional without much personality, which seems surprising for a country with such a unique history

I've heard that about Paris, France. Even though South Korea and Japan have the best technology, you will still see some bathrooms with a round hole in the ground for a toilet. in Korea, some bathrooms have just a hole in the ground, other bathrooms have modern toilets and still other bathrooms have a modern toilet with a round hole in the ground in the next stall.

That's more China, and sometimes way out in the sticks in Korea. Not really in Japan.

Again, it depends on where you go. If you know where to go, there is just about whatever floats your boat.

I would look at tours and cruises. Their itineraries reflect the venues and "attractions" that the World considers most interesting in Japan. Make a short list based on where they will be in Japan and the available travel resources.

I have toured Italy, Spain, and Great Britain using that method, and it worked out very well.
