The Senators that voted down the proposal about "background-checks," noted that sandwiched within the proposal, was still the banning of assault-style weapons, which was the original proposal made and that is why they turned it down. If the proposal focused only on increasing background checks to include gun shows or those with diagnosed dangerous mental-illnesses, it would have most likely been passed. I see no problem with background checks, if the reasons for denial of ownership is strictly limited to violent offenders and those people with diagnosed mental-illnesses that may likely lead to the threatening of others.
