U.S. Presidents and the Idea of Adding Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to annex Canada and make it the 51st U.S. state, but he has also said the idea is “highly unlikely” and that he does not rule out using force to achieve it POLITICO.

Trump has made these comments publicly on multiple occasions, including on Fox News, NBC’s Meet the Press, and Truth Social, where he has framed the idea as a way to eliminate tariffs and integrate Canada more closely with the U.S. economy TIME+1. In May 2025, he offered Canada a deal: join the U.S. “Golden Dome” missile defense system for free if it becomes a state, or pay $61 billion to join as a separate nation Newsweek.

However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been unequivocal: “It will never happen” TIME+1. He and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have both stressed that Canada is an independent, sovereign nation and will remain so. Carney has also said Trump “admires Canada” but is focused on trade, defense, and NATO commitments rather than annexation TIME.

While Trump has “always talked about” the idea and has made it a political talking point, there is no credible evidence that any U.S. president has seriously pursued or implemented annexation of Canada. The concept remains a rhetorical and political stance, not a policy in action.
CANADA?
GREENLAND?

WTF is the matter with our President?

It is my opinion he enjoys causing sweat to pour out of Democrats. Notice it has not happened. It tickles him to see the press go bananas. He has them talking about his points and they forget to talk about the news.

It may be that you do not grasp the difference between how things are supposed to work and how they really work.
After seven plus decades on this planet, with large family ~aunts/uncles - etc., siblings-etc., kids, grandkids, etc.; plus an eclectic occupational background and active in local politics and community organizations, I think I have a gauge on how things really work.;)

I know that just because "how things really work" doesn't match "how things should work" is no excuse for keeping the status quo.
Constant strive to improve is (should be) the guiding principle of a thriving and growing culture.

In your mind, it is that he's not a socialist=wanna be communist such as all your Leftist idols and past failure Leftist/Democrat POTUS.

Trump is isolationist…
He has destroyed economic and military alliances we have built for 80 years

Trump thrives on Chaos
Tear it down, Piss them off, Mess it up

With no idea what to do next

Living as close to the border with Canada as I do, I've encountered many Canadians coming down here to shop the better prices and better selections/varieties of consumer goods and services (especially medical if they don't want to risk the longer waiting time lists up there).

I've encountered many 'Canucks' who've wished their province(s) could be a part of the USA.
In many ways, Canada is now more like the USA than the Commonwealth.

I recall about sixty-seventy years ago in my childhood how our trips over the border had Canada seem like a foreign country. Now-a-days there is very little difference between us and them.

There have been times in the past where Canada could do things on behalf of the USA internationally and not be penalized for such the way the USA would be. There is something of value/merit in being close but separate.

BTW, with eleven provinces and a land area close to the size of the USA, I'd think doing a province by province offer of annexation would be more workable than bringing in all of Canada as a whole 'single' state.

If you teach inner city for too long your re entry into normal teaching may be rough.

I have had trouble with students' names at times as well. It usually ends with a laugh with both me and the student until I get it down. Always with good humor and full respect.

I was several miles from Canada last year close to Thanksgiving. This time I was told to enter, I needed a passport. I still do not have a passport.

Three times I have been there. The last time I walked over the bridge from Niagara Falls and was just asked a few questions and then told come on. No passport needed. Earlier I flew from Georgia to New Jersey then to Germany stopping in New Foundland where we got off the airplane and went into the terminal buildings. 1.5 years later I flew back to New Foundland from Frankfurt, Germany again stopping in New Foundland where it was covered in deep snow. Being in the Army, no passport needed.

Been a few years since I was last over the border (live in the Vancouver area) but last I knew, my enhanced driver's license still works for border crossing ID.

It was for the annual airshow at Abbotsford, which is just several miles from my home. I've mulled doing such again this year, but usually have other schedule conflicts to juggle.

Trump understands that many of us in the USA are tired of the world treating us like a 'sugar daddy' to bail them out of their problems and mistakes.
He is seeking more equitable terms on those alliances, they need to carry their own weight and contribute, not keep coming looking for a hand out from Uncle Sugar-daddy(Sam).

Trump understands that much of the U.S. are freaking morons and don’t understand we are part of a global economy. We don’t get to call the shots and we benefit from deals that are mutually beneficial

Ally!?! You mean dependent? Yeah

They use our military for defense and act like an ungrateful parasite

Actually, Canadian airspace is the primary defense against a Russian missile attacks.

Canada does not have to worry about a Russian invasion…..they are not a target, WE are

Who is threatening to invade Canada?
What is the U.S. protecting?

NORAD is our primary defense against Russian missiles targeting the U.S. What happens if Canada stops providing NORAD sites?

They don’t. Russia can’t afford to go to war against us because they would be crushed economically unless they went nuclear
