To Get Back to Sanity, "He" Must Be Used for "He or She"

In a related pronoun misuse, Americans have been indoctrinated to use "they" with the singular, as in "If a worker does this, they should lose their job." Before the present grammatical decadence, "he" was always used, no matter if some of the workers referred to were female. How does German handle a singular pronoun with indefinite gender?
