Even if he gets found insane he isn't going to get off. He will still be locked up for at least a very long time.
I doubt very seriously he is found incompetent to stand trial.
Just having mental issues doesn’t allow you to escape prosecution. Defense would have to prove you were incapable of knowing what you did was wrong. That there was no Mens Rea (guilty mind).
However, it is widely accepted in case law, and statute law in some states, that any sort of mental impairment can make you eligible for a reduced sentence.
